Jacques Dupuis, a Jesuit who spent decades teaching in Rome and India, developed notions of religious pluralism over time and after the changes of Vatican II that suggested every religion could be a path to God in its own way, rather than simply being defective attempts at what Christianity had perfected. Ultimately he was silenced and denounced by the Vatican, who saw him as the symbol of post-Vatican II accommodation to other religions and a sign of dangerous elements in the Jesuits and other religious orders active in Asia. The book is based on an extended interview with learned Vatican observer Gerry O'Connell.
