After killing the son of an important Montreal merchant in self-defense, Bemidii, a Metis hunter, finds himself on the run. Hiding out at an island fort on Lake Superior, he soon encounters Camilla, a French-Canadian beauty. A beauty whose brother has recently been murdered. Their friendship, uneasy at first, soon leads to stronger feelings. That is until Bemidii's secret is discovered. Clasped in irons and being held for trial, he fears that no man's word can spare him from the reach and wrath of Camilla and the murdered brother's father. Now, not only is Bemidii on trial for murder, but his and Camilla's love is on trial as well.
