The observation of the representations of Francis of Assisi and his disciples in the writings of non-denominational authors (twentieth and twenty-first centuries) is not limited to an analysis of the metamorphoses of a historical and religious figure. Rather, these representations reveal the sociopolitical expectations and aesthetic concerns of an era.
