'Saint Bernard was and still is a master of the spiritual life', wrote the late Bernard scholar Jean Leclercq, From his own day-he died in 1153-throughout the Middle Ages, and still today, he has been portrayed in paintings, manuscript illuminations, wooden and stone carvings, and stained glass windows.
