In the past the expression of personal identity, individuality and inner depths has often been estimated not to have begun until Platon, with Paul and Augustine as further protagonists of this development, whereas the idea of individuality has been largely denied for earlier antiquity. This volume puts this thesis to the test. Which traces of individuality, inwardness or the idea of inner depth can already be found before Hellenistic times? Which transformations of the concept of self already took place before the Hellenistic period? Did religious practices, outside the official religion and elite writings, have an impact on the expression of identity or individuality?
